My Curriculum VitaeEducation:
Dr Ali Sawi Received his B.Sc. and Masters in political science from Cairo University in 1987 (thesis: Domestic dimensions of national security). As well, he obtained his Ph.D. from the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna (thesis: Social partnership in Austria and Egypt: a comparative study) in 1991.
In addition, he managed to pass several training courses on peace & conflict resolution from the American University in Washington in 1990. In 1995, he received his Law degree from Cairo University.
Research Interest:
Dr.Ali Sawi has over 25 years of experience in legislative development, democracy assistance, participation, institutional capacity building, administrative reform and good governance structures & policies. He is also experienced in monitoring, verification and evaluation of public policies and technical assistance projects. Dr. Sawi is winner of the State Prize, 2000 (Egypt). In 2014, he was appointed member of the President’s legislative commission to draft new election laws in Egypt.
Currently, he holds the position of a tenured Professor of Political Science at Cairo University. Between 1996-2001, he worked as consultant for a USAID-funded Project on Capacity Building of Egypt’s People’s Assembly. He advised a number of governmental agencies in Egypt, e.g. the Minister of Youth and supervised a nation-wide project on “Parliament of Youth”; ministry of local development to enhance decentralization and civic engagement in local development; ministry of housing to develop framework for decentralized management in new settlements and engaging business community; and National Council for Women to develop technical assistance for women political empowerment.
Dr.Sawi has been involved in research & development activities on institutional development of parliament with the UNDP, UNWOMEN, University of Bonn, USAID, the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, Arab Organization for Administrative Development, the EU delegation in Egypt, Int. IDEA, IFES, Friederich Ebert Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, NDI, IRI, UNICEF (Egypt), IPALMO institute (Italy), and the African Development Bank.
Dr.Sawi established the first specialized research unit in legislative affairs at Cairo University named: “The Parliamentary Program” and directed it for 12 years. He also took part in establishing a post graduate degree at Cairo University “Diploma for Parliamentary Studies”, the leading program in that field in Egyptian universities, and supervised it for 10 years.
